Biobased construction materials are rapidly gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials. Made from renewable resources such as wood, bamboo, hemp, or agricultural residues, these materials offer a unique opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of the construction sector. In addition to their renewable nature, biobased building materials contribute to CO₂ emission reductions and align with the transition to a circular economy.
At Hedgehog, we have developed extensive expertise in biobased building materials. Lifecycle assessments (LCAs) of these materials are one of our specialties. We have contributed to the inclusion of many environmental cost indicator (MKI) scores for biobased building materials in the Dutch National Environmental Database (NMD) and have delved into CO₂ storage in biobased materials and related regulations at both national and European levels.
Our experience includes several leading collaborations, such as:
- The Natural Pavilion at the Floriade in Almere, where we worked with Noordereng Projecten and the Woningbouwatelier to analyse the environmental impact of innovative materials.
- Participation in TNO projects focused on emission-free construction with biobased materials and the high-value reuse of waste wood.
- Our active role in Building Balance, aimed at strengthening and accelerating biobased value chains.
