The Dutch “Raad voor Cultuur” (governmental advisory board for culture) recently published the report “Cultuur Natuurlijk”. The report addresses the status-quo of sustainability in the cultural field, because the opportunities to make the cultural sector more green are promising. And needed.
We from Hedgehog Company are honored that one of our cases, calculating the impact of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, is used in this report to demonstrate how sustainability actions can take form within the cultural sector.
Cultural sector: important in tackling sustainability challenges
In the report we read the Dutch cultural sector can fulfill an important role in the sustainable transition; with using its immense creativity to find sustainable solutions and inspire audiences about the importance of sustainability. The first recommendation of the Raad voor Cultuur towards the sector is: “Make a baseline measurement and action plan”. Because only when you know your current environmental impact, you have the chance to minimise this impact.
Calculating the impact of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet
We have helped the Dutch Nationale Opera & Ballet (DNO&B), mapping their main emissions sources. We performed an organisational carbon footprint, according to the Greenhouse Gas-protocol (GHG).
We did this by:
- Identifying relevant scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions sources
- Setting up a data collection process
- Translating the inputs into carbon emissions
- Providing the results in a structured and clear report
This helped DNO&B to:
- Set up priorities for reduction plans
- Evaluate the impact of related travels/commute and all food and beverages
- Communicate transparently about their carbon emissions
All fitting perfectly in their shift towards low-carbon art: https://www.operaballet.nl/artikelen/op-naar-koolstofarme-kunst
